Translation
As a native speaker of English with an excellent grasp of the intricacies of the German language, I am well placed to understand the nuances of complex German texts and make them accessible to English-speaking readers. This skill is reflected in the distinction grade which I received in my examination for the Diploma in Translation (Chartered Institute of Linguists, London).
Many of the texts I have translated in recent years have been academic in nature. My background (DAAD scholar at the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin, Commonwealth scholar at the University of London; PhD and several years of university teaching experience) has given me a keen awareness of both German and English academic conventions, from broader differences in approach to the finer details of punctuation and citation.
I am by no means limited to academic translation, however, and enjoy working in other areas as well – I relish the specific challenges of producing appealing advertising copy, lively and informative newspaper and magazine articles, or literary texts that convey the spirit and style of the original but make sense to the target audience.
